The end of the world as we know it….no, not really. Just the end of the year, AND the end of our stay at Rotary Hall in downtown Kannapolis. John was our Toastmaster of the day, which we thought fitting, since he was also our Toastmaster of the day our first meeting at Rotary Hall, the first meeting of 2014!
He reviewed the top news stories with us, and shared some of the new words being added to the dictionary for the coming year, and shared an e-mail greeting from Dana who was absent from the group.
Appropriate to the end of the year, Georgia offered as thought of the day a quote from T.S. Elliot: “Last year’s words belong to last year. Next year’s words await another voice.” Thomas’ joke reminded us of how silly we used to think it was when people apparently talked to themselves, but now we are probably just hearing someone on their cell phone.
John spun our Table Topics from current news events. Jennifer addressing the question of whether we should be in space since there have been 3 accidents in the space program this year. Georgia took off from the top 10 weird animal stories reported to share her preference for the black panthers in Florida. Serena reminded us all about how hard it is to make new good habits stick, and Phyllis won the Best Table Topic award by addressing whether we are “cutting too much slack” for our athletes.
Matthew won Best Speaker with his report on his High Performance Leadership project about his role as sponsorship chair for the District 37 fall conference. Jerry was our other speaker, with a goodwill speech (from the Public Relations advanced manual), “Practice Makes Perfect.” Jay won Best Evaluator, evaluating Matthew’s speech; Thomas was Jerry’s evaluator.
Joyce was our general evaluator and pointed out some of our top performances. Serena noted some of our creative “non-Ahs” and double clutches as she counted ballots so that she could give out awards at the close of our meeting.
As we reviewed our upcoming plans for our new location, officers and all interested individuals were reminded to go to the D37 website to register for Jan. 10 TLI (Toastmasters Leadership Institute)…required for officers, but also some of the best (inexpensive) education available. It will be paid by the club for officers, and held in Cornelius this year.
And then we moved our supplies and meeting paraphernalia to our new location at Connect Christian Church at 3101 Davidson Highway (Highway 73 between I85 and Hwy 29) in Concord. See you there in the new year!!
