February 8, 2014: Goldmine Improv Event

February 8, 2014 Goldmine Improv!
Paul Marks from OTC Improv led our event. We laughed even more than at a usual Goldmine meeting!
We had a great line-up of our members participating:  Toastmaster and event  organizer Matthew Charity, President Serena Edwards, along with Ray Atkinson, Georgia Carlton,Gerry Fenner, Paul Junior, Thomas Kombol, Al Minter,  Sam Mullis,  Sunitha Nalla, Shyam Naryan, Alex Porter, John Shepherd, Ankur Srivastova, Sonny Tolbert, and Jerry Weikle. Guests Cindy, Julie, Kemp, Linda (our photographer), and Wilfred were joined by our retired and beloved Richard Archer.

Fun facts and activities:
Did you know that almost all 5 year olds will say they can dance, but only a few adults? We can wake up our potential, especially the right brain (creative) side to help us become calm and to solve problems.
Try these: with a partner, alternate saying 1, 2, 3…then replace first the “one” with a gesture, then both “one”  and “two,”  then replace each number with a gesture…it gets complicated.  You’ll both laugh!
Add instant humor with silly accents and voices: try the Chinese accent, old person or little kid voices.
Write each of the letters of the alphabet backward, with your non-dominant hand, starting at the right edge of your paper.  Now hold the paper up to the light so you can see through from the back side.  How’d you do?  Now try starting in the middle of the page, and use both hands, writing the letters backwards with one hand and forward with the other.  Easier or more difficult?
How about acting out a scene with a partner:  Alternate lines, with each sentence beginning with sequential letters of the alphabet?  If you say “ah” or “um” you have to start back at “A”!!!
Sometimes we laughed at and with each other, sometimes at Paul, often at ourselves.

Want more? Paul Marks and OTC  perform at Actor’s Theater, and he teaches 7 week programs 6-8 pm on Sundays at the Office Suites at the I77 Tyvola exit.  The usual price is $140 but Toastmasters get a 20% discount so just $112.

Next week we’ll be back to our usual meeting format.  Remember that our club contest for Table Topics and International Speech contest is coming March 8.  Serena is your Contest Chair…contact her if you want to be a contestant or are willing to take on a role (judge, timer, Sergeant-At-Arms, ballot counter, etc.), or can help with refreshments.
Thurs. Feb. 27 at 8 AM is Hostmasters’ contest at the Concord Regional Airport.  They have requested help.  So far Ray and I (Phyllis) are going.
See you all Saturday!
