September 15, 2012

If you heard loud laughter on Saturday morning but weren't at Goldmine, was us!   As Kim Jackson has so eloquently referred to our meetings, we were truly a learning and LAUGHTER lab.

Our very own Jessica began the meeting with TWO thoughts of the day! An excerpt from Louis L'Amour
Up to a point a man's life is shaped by environment, heredity, and the movements and changes in the world around him. Then there comes a time when it lies within his grasp to shape the clay of his life into the sort of thing he wishes to be. Only the weak blame parents, their race, their times, lack of good fortune, or the quirks of fate. Everyone has it within his power to say, 'This I am today; that I will be tomorrow.' The wish, however, must be implemented by deeds.

So much to ponder!  Alas, our Toastmaster awaits in the wings to continue our journey. TM  Karen Boothe gave us a few thoughts of her own, well, actually read,  on a T shirt, probably in Wal Mart.

The unofficial favorite - My girlfriend says I need to be more affectionate.  Now I have two girlfriends!

Mike (who dressed appropriately in his funny T shirt) told us a cute joke about a duck in a bar wanting quackers.

Sonny, our Wordmaster muddled through his plaintive word of the day.  Following suit, Kim gave us an excellent example of "what Not to Say" as Grammarian.  Serena, the Presiding Officer and Timer of the day explained her role with great finesse.

Table Topics Master, Alex Porter presented 3 questions to the group, allowing the 1st contestant to select which one he/she preferred.  The 2nd contestant selected from the remaining two and so on.

1.  Tony Danza  - "I'd like to apologize to every teacher I had".  What teacher would you like to apologize to and why?
Shyam - Are you kidding, the teachers owe ME an apology!

2.  Give me directions or advice as I travel to Dilworth.
Matthew - Since we no longer have the days when gas station attendants could assist you, listen carefully!

3.  Try to remember the days of Sept. when.....  Alex then presented an alternate question.  Who should review teachers, administrators, parents or students.
Jessica - Students would be excellent evaluators as they are the ones who spend most of the time with the teacher.

Best Table Topic - Jessica Keyes

There were two Prepared Speakers today.

Richard - "My Swing Coach"  in which Richard demonstrated his golf swing to the audience.  John, please come back soon and take him to the golf course - he's out of control.

Joyce (me) - "Apple is a Fruit" explaining the day I found out the difference between a Maxi Pad and a Max I Pad.  A technologically challenging speech>

Best Speaker - Richard Archer

Steve and Sam served as Evaluators today. They were both soooo funny that Sam lost control of his thoughts and could not stop laughing, hysterically!  If laughter is the best medicine, we overdosed this Saturday.

Best Evaluator - Sam Mullis

Jerry served as Master Evaluator, trying to keep Steve & Sam intact.

Ah Stick - Kim Jackson

Kim will not be renewing her Goldmine membership.  On a personal note, Kim is the reason I joined Toastmasters.  I remember walking into my first meeting, sitting between Wayne Jones and Lee Johnson, not knowing what to expect.  It was Kim's professionalism, friendliness and confidence that impressed me the most!  We'll miss you Kim.
